The Story

FOR THOSE ON THE FENCE, here’s my story.

So my dad told me when I was 14/15 years old to get a trade behind me when I leave school. His words were “that way, you will always have something to fall back on”.

15 years ago, I left Northbrook College in Worthing West Sussex. Weeks into my entry level, I still couldn’t safely use a simple hand tool.

Years later I walked out with many Diplomas. Diplomas in Site Carpentry, Bench Joinery, Shopfitting Joinery and Wood Machining for Joinery Manufacture.

Immediately after leaving college, I started working for Taylor Wimpy. Three years in and the site foreman really started to grate on me. Marching around looking down on you as just another number. Blaming everyone for being behind schedule when all he ever done was drink tea and eat bacon buttys instead of project managing. This was what I thought at the time but, we all know with age comes experience and understanding. At my naive teenage years (so soon after putting so much hard work in) I left and fell out of love with carpentry, building and site work.
Shortly after leaving not knowing what direction I was heading towards, I started working with my brother in a healthcare call centre and quickly became a team leader. My leadership career kept progressing and progressing leading to management with huge responsibilities. Managing large well known companies with teams of 200+ people.

When things are meant to be they just fall into place and sometimes you can’t even see the changes ahead. I don’t know how and I don’t know when but out of nowhere my love for woodwork was back. I began running my own company. MY carpentry company. I fell back in love with what I spent so many years learning but, this time there was no greasy old foreman calling the shots… I was!

I could be home to eat dinner with my family, take my girls to school and pick them up, watch them grow, spend a day off with my better half and not have to take a days holiday with approval from the bosses.

There are no limitations to what you can do if you truly love doing the work you do. Be your own boss, be brave, take a leap and trust your ability. Life is all about risks and if you willing to take that step go and OWN IT !!!

Life is a game – you can be a player or a toy.
